چکیده

Concerning the influence of the dielectric constant on the electrostatic potential in the bulk of electrolyte solutions, we investigate a charge conserving Poisson-Boltzmann (CCPB) equation [31, 32] with a variable dielectric coefficient and a small parameter (related to the Debye screening length) in a bounded connected domain with smooth boundary. Under the Robin boundary condition with a given applied potential, the limiting behavior (as ↓ 0) of the solution (the electrostatic potential) has been rigorously studied. In particular, under the charge neutrality constraint, our result exactly shows the effects of the dielectric coefficient and the applied potential on the limiting value of the solution in the interior domain. The main approach is the Pohozaev’s identity of this model. On the other hand, under the charge non-neutrality constraint, we show that the maximum difference between the boundary and interior values of the solution has a lower bound log 1 as goes to zero. Such an asymptotic blow-up behavior describes an unstable phenomenon which is totally different from the behavior of the solution under the charge neutrality constraint.

Electrostatic analysis of the charged surface in a solution via the finite element method: The Poisson-Boltzmann theory

Electrostatic potential as well as the local volume charge density are computed for a macromolecule by solving the Poisson-Boltzmann equation (PBE) using the finite element method (FEM). As a verification, our numerical results for a one dimensional PBE, which corresponds to an infinite-length macromolecule, are compared with the existing analytical solution and good agreement is found. As a ma...

New Poisson-boltzmann Type Equations: One Dimensional Solutions

The Poisson-Boltzmann (PB) equation is conventionally used to model the equilibrium of bulk ionic species in different media and solvents. In this paper we study a new PoissonBoltzmann type (PB n) equation with a small dielectric parameter 2 and nonlocal nonlinearity which takes into consideration of the preservation of the total amount of each individual ion. This equation can be derived from ...

An ionic concentration and size dependent dielectric permittivity Poisson-Boltzmann model for biomolecular solvation studies.

By considering the influence of volume exclusion on the solvent dielectric, a variable dielectric Poisson-Boltzmann (VDPB) model is explored for molecular solvation studies by using a dielectric as an explicit function of ionic sizes and concentrations. A finite element method is adopted and an iterative strategy is introduced to numerically solve the VDPB equation. According to our computation...

Two- and Three-Dimensional Poisson-Nernst-Planck Simulations of Current Flow Through Gramicidin A

We simulate sodium chloride currents through the gramicidin A channel using the spectral element method to solve the three-dimensional Poisson–Nernst– Planck (PNP) equations. Using the spectral element method, we are able to simulate the entire channel, plus large enough portions of the lipid bilayer and baths to ensure that all boundary conditions are realistic. In these simulations, we rely o...

Analysis of the Poisson–Nernst–Planck equation in a ball for modeling the Voltage–Current relation in neurobiological microdomains

The electro-diffusion of ions is often described by the Poisson–Nernst–Planck (PNP) equations, which couple nonlinearly the charge concentration and the electric potential. This model is used, among others, to describe the motion of ions in neuronal micro-compartments. It remains at this time an open question how to determine the relaxation and the steady state distribution of voltage when an i...
